The Natural Resources and Environmental Management inquiry (Wai 3450)
The Ministry is the lead agency for the Crown’s response to the Waitangi Tribunal’s Natural Resources and Environmental Management inquiry.
In September 2024, the Tribunal initiated the Natural Resources and Environmental Management inquiry (Wai 3450) to inquire into claims concerning natural resources and environmental management issues.
Claims addressed in the Wai 3325 inquiry cover a range of kaupapa including:
- Climate targets, emission reduction budgets and plans, the Emissions Trading Scheme, national adaptation plans, and exemption of sectors in particular agriculture
- Enabling and resourcing Māori to respond to climate change (including risk of natural hazards to Māori land)
- Disproportionate impacts of climate change on Māori
- Incorporation of mātauranga Māori and Te Ao Māori into climate policy
- Protection and preservation of taonga from impacts of climate change.
