The Our air 2021: preliminary data release is part of a series of environmental reports produced by the Ministry for the Environment and Stats NZ. This report presents the latest data on the state of New Zealand’s air quality. 

The World Health Organization (WHO) released updated air quality guidelines on 23 September 2021. The new air quality guidelines are more stringent for most of the critical air pollutants and reflect the overwhelming evidence of the impacts to human health, even at low levels.

A revised Our air 2021 report, that incorporates the analysis of the WHO 2021 air quality guidelines has been released.

Correction: 22 November 2021

We have corrected the air quality guideline for one-hour average carbon monoxide concentrations in the second bullet point on page 11. The correct guideline value is 35 mg/m3, not 30 mg/m3 as originally published.

We also corrected the citation associated with this guideline value to the World Health Organization 2010 guidelines.
