Bata Industrials has been making boots from its Ōwhiro Bay factory since 1948. It supplies around 160,000 pairs of PVC gumboots each year to the food, construction and farming industries. That’s around 480 tonnes of PVC.
Through its gumboot recycling programme, Bata Industrials re-processes old, used gumboots back into new gumboots, saving them from going to landfill. Its aim is to have every pair of gumboots it produces returned to the factory, ready to make new ones.
The Ministry’s Waste Investments funding has helped Bata Industrials to expand its recycling programme by investing in machinery to reprocess old gumboots into raw materials, ready to be turned back into new boots.
