Emissions reduction plans explained

Our second emissions reduction plan

Planning is now underway on the second emissions reduction plan. This will cover the emission budget for the years 2026 to 2030.

The plan will be published before the end of 2024.

Consultation on ERP2

Consultation is live on proposals to inform the plan and it closes on 19 August 2024. Share your knowledge and perspectives during public consultation.

Our engagement approach

The Government wants to hear from a range of voices and perspectives as we develop the plan.

Several advisory groups are being used to support Government officials as we develop the plan. These include:

  • The Climate Business Advisory Group
  • The Local Government Emissions Reduction Advisory Group
  • The Climate Youth Advisory Group.

There will be a public consultation on ERP2 in the middle of the year.

About ERP

Emissions reduction plans are produced every five years. They help us navigate toward a low-emissions economy by setting out actions to meet our emissions budgets. These budgets are stepping stones to our 2050 targets.

The ERP requires climate action from every part of government and sector of the economy including:

  • transport
  • energy
  • building and construction
  • waste
  • agriculture
  • forestry.
