In many areas on-site wastewater systems are not providing adequate levels of treatment and are having an adverse impact on human health and the environment. This discussion document assessed different policy options for improving the management and environmental performance of on-site systems. The discussion focused on a national environmental standard as the preferred option to achieve the objective. Submissions closed on 26 September 2008. A report on the submissions received has been published.

The proposed National Environmental Standard for On-site Wastewater Systems has been withdrawn.
