The Commission produced its first 2050 target review and recommendations in November 2024, including a one-off review assessing whether or not emissions from international shipping and aviation should be included in the 2050 target.
This report is the Government’s formal response to the Commission’s 2024 report and recommendations. It is published in accordance with section 5U(3) of the Climate Change Response Act 2002. The report outlines the Government’s response to the Commission’s recommendations, including rationale for the following Government decisions:
- Maintain a Net Zero 2050 target for long-lived gases
- Reduce the 2050 biogenic methane target to 14 – 24% below 2017 levels
- Continue to not include emissions from international shipping and aviation in the 2050 target
- Maintaining current approach to post 2050 emissions reductions.
