This report provides an updated national assessment of New Zealand’s groundwater quality, covering monitoring data from territorial authorities, GNS Science, and ESR, for 1990 to 2024. It was completed by GNS science with guidance from the Ministry for the Environment and Stats NZ, for the purposes of national environmental reporting.
It has been published alongside Our environment 2025 to enable the inclusion of the most up-to-date groundwater state and trend information available, specifically for Escherichia coli, nitrate-nitrogen and pesticides. It provides background and context for these assessments and information on additional groundwater variables and trend periods not reported in Our environment 2025.
Stats NZ will use the data sourced from this report to update the Groundwater quality indicator on 24 June 2025. Statistics may differ due to differences in the approach to calculating state and trends.
