Seeking applications for a new member of the Waste Investment Panel

The Ministry for the Environment – Manatū Mō Te Taiao is seeking a new member for our Waste Investment Panel, for a term of up to three years.

This is an opportunity to play a key role in how the Ministry invests in helping Aotearoa New Zealand move to a low-waste, low-emissions, and efficient economy. We are looking for in-depth knowledge of the waste sector, particularly in areas such as supply chain, resource recovery technologies and processing infrastructure.

The panel provides strategic assessments of large applications to the Waste Minimisation Fund and makes recommendations to the Ministry.

Learn more about the Waste Minimisation Fund.

The panel may consider:

  • strategic fit
  • value for money
  • additionality (generating public benefits that would not otherwise be realised)
  • commercial benefits and market dynamics
  • sector implications
  • supply chain and market considerations
  • public benefit,  including the extent of Māori involvement and te ao Māori
  • intellectual property creation, enhancement or protection.

In addition to waste sector expertise, we’re looking for candidates with skills and experience in:

  • governance in a professional capacity
  • commercial, investment, finance or economics
  • Government funding or investment programmes
  • innovation or commercialisation
  • te ao Māori
  • partnerships with the community, local government or industry
  • circular economy or sustainability
  • representation on boards or committees of relevant agencies with investment programmes.

The panel meets around once a month, usually online, to discuss applications. The expected time commitment is six to eight hours per month, including preparation.

Panel members are paid for their time in line with Cabinet Fees Framework for members appointed to bodies in which the Crown has an interest. Current remuneration is $600 per day.
