Selecting project names for Fast-track applications

Choosing the right name for your Fast-track application helps keep things clear and organised.  Here is our guidance

Keep It short and clear

  • Use one to three words for your project name if possible.
  • Avoid long or complicated names.

It should be factual, not promotional

Your project name should describe what the project is, not sell it.

Skip marketing language or slogans. For example, don’t use “very affordable subdivision.”

Describe the activity

  • Pick a name that shows what the project does, like “Solar Farm” or “Quarry.”
  • For housing or similar projects, a simple one or two-word name is enough.

Add a location if relevant

  • Include a place name if it helps identify your project, e.g., “Marlborough” or “Lake Taupō.”

Show the stage if needed

  • If your project has stages, add this to the name (for example, “– Stage 1”).

Leave out unnecessary words

  • Don’t add “the,” “project,” or “development” to your name. These are already in Fast-track documents.
  • There’s no need to say “resubmission” in the project name.

Follow the rules

  • For substantive projects, make sure your project name matches what’s listed in Schedule 2 of the Act or the Notice of Decisions letter if it’s a referred project.
