Saving construction waste

Up to 50 per cent of waste in New Zealand that goes to landfill comes from construction and demolition. Using an innovative sorting method, Green Gorilla ensures every piece of construction waste is evaluated and usable materials aren’t sent to landfill.

What the issue is

Common construction materials like wood, nails, and plasterboard last for a very long time. However, these materials are often sent to landfill after a demolition. Around half of New Zealand’s landfill waste comes from construction and demolition.

What Green Gorilla are doing about it

Waste management company, Green Gorilla recognizes that these materials still have a lot to give. They process around 300 tonnes of construction and demolition waste every day. Green Gorilla also does its best to put every possible scrap back into the world for re-use.

Wood is checked for nails by a large magnet and then sent to a chipper to create fuel, landscape chips, and dry animal bedding. Plasterboard off-cuts are ground down into Green Gorilla gypsum which can be used as a fertilizer, compost, or cement additive.

Overall, Green Gorilla reports that it saves 75-80% of the construction waste that comes through their facility from going to landfill.
