Zero Waste has been imbedded in the culture and practices of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei for more than 20 years. Supported by funding from Te Pūtea Whakamauru Para -Waste Minimisation Fund, plans are underway to expand the delivery of wanaga/workshops to increase waste diversion and improve waste data collection. These efforts will create greater awareness around reducing waste and circular thinking in their community.
Ōrākei Hapori Parakore will be staffing up to produce a series of in-person parakore wananga, as well as instructional videos and virtual workshops, to encourage all ages to get involved in looking after their environment, feeding the soil and growing their own food.
In addition, waste audits will be carried out, the results of which will inform the development of a Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Mātauranga Māori Waste Strategy with a vision, targets and cultural indicators which will ultimately lead to other avenues to minimise waste and reducing waste to landfill.
