The Whangamaire stream flows into the Waikato River. It is culturally significant to iwi.
Landcare Research is working with the Tapuri community, local farmers, the Tapuri Marae, and NIWA New Zealand to clean it up and make sure that no harmful chemicals make it into the Waikato River via the stream.
They have constructed two wetlands and planted more than 18,000 plants across two dairy farms next to the Whangamaire Stream. Children from the Taupiri School and community groups have been involved in wetland planting days and wetland ecology workshops.
