Effective international carbon markets can help to unlock more ambitious mitigation action. It is vital that these markets have environmental integrity.

The New Zealand government is committed to ensuring the environmental integrity of any offshore mitigation that may be used to meet our NDC commitments.

New Zealand officials have been working with their counterparts towards standards and guidelines for environmental integrity in international carbon markets.

This document is a work-in-progress draft resource for practitioners to use when designing and implementing market mechanisms.

It is:

  • not government policy
  • not yet fully developed standards or guidelines, rather it provides information on key environmental integrity concepts and considerations.

This early-stage work was shared at COP24 in Katowice to inform negotiations on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
