This report, prepared by NIWA, details the methodologies underlying updated estimates of wildfire risk in Aotearoa New Zealand. The estimates were used in the measure of Wildfire risk in the Environmental indicators Te taiao Aotearoa series.

The New Zealand Fire Danger Rating was used for this study, which is also used by Fire and Emergency New Zealand to monitor fire risk in New Zealand. Fire danger ratings are calculated using four weather variables: 24-hour rainfall; temperature; relative humidity; and wind speed.
