Water quality state and trends in New Zealand rivers Analysis of national data ending in 2024

This report documents the collation and standardisation of measured water quality data collected by regional councils, unitary authorities and Earth Sciences New Zealand across New Zealand’s river water quality monitoring network from 1995 to 2024.

It includes preliminary state and trend analyses and summary statistics for measures of bacteria (Escherichia coli), sediment (clarity and turbidity), and nutrients and organic pollution (macroinvertebrate community index, nitrogen, and phosphorus), in New Zealand’s rivers.

The report supports the use and interpretation of the collected data for national environmental reporting.
