Spatial modelling of river water-quality state Incorporating monitoring data from 2020 to 2024

This report details the generation of model-based predictions of water quality state for the entirety of New Zealand’s river length for 2020 to 2024. The predictions use measured river water quality data collected by regional councils, unitary authorities and Earth Sciences New Zealand, and flow, climate, catchment and other data and metadata.

The report includes summaries of predictions for measures of bacteria (Escherichia coli), sediment (clarity and turbidity), and nutrients and organic pollution (macroinvertebrate community index, nitrogen, and phosphorus).

The report supports the use and interpretation of these predictions for national environmental reporting.
