In 2023 the Ministry for the Environment began a process to review and update the National Estuary Monitoring Protocol (NEMP). The review focused on whether the NEMP is still fit for purpose, whether specific method updates are required, and/or whether improvements are needed to fill gaps or meet changed needs. The review included engagement with all sixteen regional councils and unitary authorities, as well as with national research providers with experience in estuary monitoring.
An update to the NEMP is now underway and is expected to be published in 2025.
