National Policy Statement for Indigenous Biodiversity: General summary

The National Policy Statement for Indigenous Biodiversity (NPSIB) is an essential part of our response to biodiversity decline in Aotearoa. The NPSIB provides direction to councils on how to identify, maintain and protect our indigenous biodiversity.

This information sheet provides a quick overview of the intent and key provisions of the NPSIB. It covers why the NPSIB is needed, what it aims to achieve, who is responsible for implementing it and summarises some of the key provisions and their effect on existing uses and new subdivision, use and development.

It is also available in te reo Māori and should be read alongside the NPSIB.
