In January 2025 the Government submitted New Zealand’s second international climate target under the Paris Agreement to the United Nations. The Paris Agreement is the global climate treaty which seeks to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Under the Agreement, each country sets targets for reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, known as Nationally Determined Contributions.
New Zealand’s second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC2) aims to reduce emissions by 51 to 55 per cent compared to 2005 levels, by 2035.
The NDC2 target is economy-wide, covering all sectors and all greenhouse gases. As well as detail on the scope and coverage of NDC2, the submission to the United Nations includes ‘information to facilitate clarity, transparency, and understanding’, which is required under the rules of the Paris Agreement.
