The Managing Upstream project aims to help inform management decisions when establishing freshwater objectives under the Freshwater NPS and increase knowledge on the state of different estuary types in New Zealand.

The Managing Upstream project aims to help inform management decisions when establishing freshwater objectives under the Freshwater NPS and increase knowledge on the state of different estuary types in New Zealand.

Stage 1 of the project is a scoping study to identify key estuarine attributes and important indicators of estuarine state (state variables).

This is the first of two reports under Stage 1 which focuses on identifying candidate attributes and state variables for the national values of ecosystem health, human health for recreation, and mahinga kai. It provides a short list for further investigation in Stage 1B.
