Summary of findings

  • Environmental concerns are the fourth most important issue facing New Zealanders. The cost of living, crime and housing are more top of mind.
  • People who identified environmental concerns as top of mind cited climate change as their key concern. Other environmental topics (such as waste, freshwater and biodiversity) barely register.
  • New Zealanders are generally motivated to reduce their environmental impact. The strongest motivators are linked to personal benefits such as living in a warm, dry house.
  • It is unlikely that that environmental concerns will become top of mind if there are more immediate concerns. However, there is an opportunity to link specific environmental issues with personal benefits to incentivise people to take action.
