The Ministry for the Environment (MfE) and The Nature Conservancy Aotearoa New Zealand (TNC NZ) commissioned scientists to develop a quantitative coastal wetland blue carbon dataset, identify gaps, and propose a research plan to address these. The dataset can inform policy development, restoration of coastal systems, and future decisions on blue carbon within carbon credit schemes and New Zealand’s Greenhouse Gas Inventory.
This report is the result and builds on a previous report: Coastal Wetland Blue Carbon Policy Research in Aotearoa | Ministry for the Environment.
The MfE-TNC partnership will continue through an upcoming project to implement the research plan to fill the identified data gaps in the blue carbon dataset. The resulting dataset would inform policy development, restoration of coastal systems, and future decisions on blue carbon within carbon credit schemes and New Zealand’s Greenhouse Gas Inventory.
