Cross-referencing Legal Protections on Land in New Zealand with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Protected Areas Framework

This report is one of a series of reports commissioned by the Ministry to improve the Protected Areas Network of New Zealand (PAN-NZ). It cross-references legal protections in New Zealand to classifications used by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature for protected areas reporting.

PAN-NZ was developed by Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research to aggregate and combine a series of distinct legally protected areas into a single mapping layer. By 2023, this map was out of date and incomplete, making it unsuitable for policy and regulatory purposes.

Two previous reports to improve the PAN-NZ have been published. See 'Related publications' below.

Applied to the PAN-NZ, this new report will improve the comparison of the type and number of protected areas in New Zealand to other countries.
