Compilation of potential attributes of ecological integrity for Aotearoa New Zealand

The Ministry for the Environment sought to identify environmental variables, or ‘attributes’, to support monitoring and management of ecological integrity. Environmental variables provide essential information to inform future work in this area.

These variables cover various environmental domains, including land (which includes soil), freshwater, coastal and seabed, estuaries, and air.

In 2022, the Ministry commissioned the Cawthron Institute, Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research and the University of Canterbury to produce this report to compile and synthesise potential attributes and identify any gaps in the Ministry-proposed definition of ecological integrity.
