Development of New Zealand’s Flood Map has moved to the next stage, with a contractor now on board to set up how we bring together local, regional, and national data.
The Ministry for the Environment has been working with local government to identify and collate existing datasets that can be used in New Zealand’s Flood Map.
The project is now developing the systems that will bring flood hazard data from across the country into one place — New Zealand’s Flood Map.
This stage of the project will determine how different pieces of existing data will work together to deliver an initial map. It will also help us identify gaps in the data that may need to be addressed in future versions of the map.
It will provide trusted information to support planning, land use and emergency responses.
The first map is expected to be published in early 2027, with early access to some data and mapping expected by the end of 2026.
