Revised technical guidelines on how landfills are managed published by WasteMINZ

The Technical Guidelines for Disposal to Land provide a guide to operators, consultants and regulators, like local councils, on the siting, design, operation and monitoring of landfills in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The guidelines were first published in 2016, revised in 2018 and again in 2022.

The Technical Guidelines are an important document and provide key information to stakeholders within New Zealand’s waste management system. This latest update provides further insight in promoting best practice when it comes to waste disposal to landfill sites.

Changes made to the Technical Guidelines

The latest update provides waste acceptance criteria for Class 3 landfills and revises Waste Acceptance Criteria for Class 4 landfills, among other improvements.

This means that those who have a hand in managing landfill sites have a clear understanding of what is expected of them.

The updates were developed by a reference group, including members of the WasteMINZ Disposal to Land sector group steering committee, industry experts and Ministry for the Environment staff.

The impact of these updated guidelines will mean that the old MfE cleanfill guidelines from 2002 have been replaced by the revised technical guidelines of 2022.
