On 1 July 2024, Cabinet agreed to a review of the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s management of the Wairoa River bar following the flooding event in Wairoa in June 2024.
The Ministry for the Environment will manage the review, which will be carried out by an independent consultant.
The purpose of the review is to urgently assess the way the Wairoa River bar is currently managed, and decision-making around monitoring of the river and the bar. The review will also find recommendations about how the river and bar could be monitored and managed in the future.
The review is expected to take around four weeks, with findings and recommendations to be presented to the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, Wairoa District Council and Tātau Tātau o Te Wairoa Trust in August.
See the review’s Terms of Reference.
