Legislation passed to repeal the Natural and Built Environment Act and Spatial Planning Act
The legislation to repeal the two Acts were passed in parliament in December 2023.
The Acts came into effect in August 2023. The SPA and most of the NBA’s provisions are not in use.
Almost all resource management activities and areas continue to be covered by the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA).
The Ministry has prepared information on what the NBA repeal means for:
- fast-track consenting
- freshwater consents
- the National Policy Statement on Freshwater Management
- requiring authorities
- Treaty settlements and other arrangements with Māori.
