Enhanced protection for highly productive land

Environment Minister David Parker has released the National Policy Statement for Highly Productive Land. (NPS-HPL). Our most versatile land will now receive enhanced protection.

About 15 per cent of New Zealand’s land is categorised as highly productive.

Since 2002, 35,000 hectares of highly productive land has been carved up for urban or rural residential development. Once the land is built on, it cannot be used for traditional forms of food production.

This national policy statement has been developed to enhance protection for Aotearoa New Zealand’s most productive land for now, and for the future.
