Consultation on reducing the environmental impact of fluorinated gases

We are seeking feedback on proposed measures to reduce the environmental impact of fluorinated gases (F-gases).

F-gas refrigerants are found in a range of products such as heat pumps, dehumidifiers, vehicles, fridges and freezers.

F-gases contribute significantly to global warming. This is because they are potent greenhouse gases with global warming potential hundreds or thousands of times greater than carbon dioxide.

Our plan proposes:

  • a regulated product stewardship scheme for refrigerants
  • prohibiting the import and sale of pre-charged equipment when alternatives are available, which is expected to happen over the next 10 years.

Proposals for refrigerant product stewardship

The Government will consider the submissions and may refine the proposals based on feedback received.

Following consultation and further policy development, the regulations will likely be in force (subject to Cabinet decisions) in 2024.

Proposals for import prohibition on pre-charged equipment

The details of our prohibition timeline will be refined in response to the feedback we receive, and from working as needed with interested parties.
