Climate Change Commission’s first national adaptation plan monitoring report released

He Pou a Rangi - Climate Change Commission has released its inaugural monitoring report to assess the national adaptation plan’s implementation and effectiveness.

The Commission plays an important role in independently monitoring and reporting on the implementation and effectiveness of Aotearoa New Zealand's first national adaptation plan.

The plan was published in 2022 and set out priorities and actions up to 2028 to help make homes, infrastructure and communities more resilient to climate change. The actions were designed to address risks set out in the 2020 national climate change risk assessment.

The Commission will provide reports on the plan every two years from 2024. Each progress report must:

  • assess the progress of implementation of the plan

  • judge how well the plan achieves its objectives and responds to risks

  • identify barriers to implementation and effectiveness, and how those can be managed

  • include any other relevant matters

  • consider the issues, where relevant, listed under section 5M of the Climate Change Response Act.

The Commission also provided its first annual monitoring report on emissions reductions, which assesses progress against New Zealand’s 2050 target, emissions budgets and the first emissions reduction plan, in July this year.
