Call for Crown nominations for Waikato River Authority

We are seeking nominations for Crown appointed members of the Waikato River Authority (WRA). The WRA supports projects that suppor

The WRA board was established by the:

  • Waikato-Tainui Raupatu Claims (Waikato River) Settlement Act 2010
  • Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Raukawa, and Te Arawa River Iwi Act 2010
  • Nga Wai o Maniapoto (Waipa River) Act 2012 (the Acts).

The Acts provide for five Crown and five River Iwi appointees to be appointed to the WRA. The terms of all five Crown-appointed members expire in May 2023.

WRA board

The WRA board must reflect a balanced mix of knowledge and experience, and at least two of the Crown-appointed members must reside in the Waikato region.

 Knowledge/experience in the following areas is desirable:

  • governance experience
  • understanding of environmental issues
  • scientific knowledge and experience
  • understanding the importance of the Waikato/Waipā River to River Iwi
  • commitment to clean up the Waikato/Waipā Rivers
  • experience in improving operations of leadership entities
  • respect for the history and tikanga of the region
  • basic understanding of te reo and tikanga Māori
  • competence in working with Māori concepts and traditions
  • the Treaty of Waitangi.
