The $6.4 million investment will continue to help the catchment groups to protect and improve freshwater quality and environmental outcomes. The funding will support a range of initiatives, including on-farm planning, water quality monitoring, educational workshops, as well as catchment coordination.
“Catchment groups are essential for looking after local freshwater and waterways,” said Lorena Stephen, General Manager – Partnerships and Investments at the Ministry for the Environment.
“This funding, which will run until the end of June 2026, ensures continuity for these groups while future funding models can be considered.”
The 11 catchment groups that have received ongoing funding are:
- Mid Canterbury Catchment Group
- South Westland Catchment Group
- Motueka Catchment Collective
- Whanganui Region Catchment Collective
- Piroa Conversation Trust
- Tukituki Land Care
- Taranaki Catchment Communities
- Manuherekia Catchment Group Incorporated
- Otago Regional Council on behalf of Pleasant River Catchment Group
- Pōrangahau Catchment Group
- Te Tautara o Pukekohe Trust
Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust and New Zealand Landcare Trust have also received funding extensions for the same period, enabling them to continue their national catchment support programmes, which collectively reach an additional 175 catchment groups.
