New Zealand has naturally high rates of erosion, due to geology and climate. However, erosion rates have increased as a result of vegetation clearing for agriculture and climate change-related events.
The risk of erosion varies throughout the country. The South Island West Coast experiences high rates of erosion due to tectonic uplift of the Southern Alps and high rainfall. The East Coast regions in the North Island experience erosion as a result of deforestation of soft rock hill country.
Storm magnitude and frequency drive erosion events, and these are likely to increase due to climate change.
