Water Conservation (Motueka River) Order 2004 [New Zealand Legislation website]

• On 6 April 1990, the Nelson Acclimatisation Society and the Council of South Island Acclimatisation Societies applied for a national water conservation order in respect of the Motueka and Riwaka Rivers and their contributing waters. The application was made to the Minister for the Environment under the Water and Soil Conservation Act 1967.
• The Minister for the Environment appointed a special tribunal who heard the application in March 1991.
• The tribunal issued its report in October 1991.
• Eighteen parties filed submissions with the Planning Tribunal.
• On 4 May 1992 a pre-hearing conference was held but the proceedings were adjourned pending the hearing and decision of the Buller water conservation order application. The Water Conservation (Buller River) Order was made on 18 June 2001.
• Evidence exchange occurred in 1999 and 2000, with the Environment Court hearing held from 22 to 23 July 2002.
• The Environment Court released its report and recommendation on 22 July 2003.
• The Water Conservation (Motueka River) Order 2004 was made on 23 August 2004.
