Research to help our waterways

Water is one of our most valuable resources. A focus of the Wānaka Water Project has been to improve understanding of the risks to waterways in the Upper Clutha catchment area and to find ways to minimise their impacts on Wānaka's awa (river) and roto.

About the project

The aim of the Wānaka Water Project is to understand what is happening to the waterways in the Upper Clutha Catchment.

Population growth and tourism in recent year has introduced new contaminants to the catchment's lakes and rivers which include Lake Wānaka, Lake Hāwea and Clutha, Hāwea and Cardrona rivers.

Information from the Wānaka Water Project is being used to improve and maintain the long-term health of the catchment's waterways. The project has already provided information for a community plan on how to look after the health of the awa for years to come.

We are proud to support this kaupapa through the Freshwater Improvement Fund.
