Planting vegetation alongside a river or stream can help that ecosystem in many ways. Plants help filter excess minerals and contaminants out of the water. They also encourage biodiversity.
That’s why it is Million Metres Streams mission to restore vegetation to a million metres of streambank across New Zealand.
The project is partially funded by New Zealanders who donate to fund a metre or more of planting.
Donors can choose exactly where their funds will be used. They receive updates on progress, including photos and measured data.
Tens of thousands of metres have already been planted through this programme, so they’re well on their way to that lucky 1 million.
