Calculate your agricultural emissions

A standardised online calculator is available to help farmers estimate their on-farm greenhouse gas emissions.

What the calculator does

In October 2025 the New Zealand Institute for Bioeconomy Science (BSI), released a free on-farm emissions calculator, supported by funding from the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).

The calculator will help you calculate the greenhouse gases coming from your farm.

See the On-Farm emissions calculator [AgMatters website].

The calculator is for anyone farming sheep, beef, dairy or deer in New Zealand.

Estimating on-farm emissions from other sources

If you want to estimate your emissions from other sources, such as fuel use, fertilisers such as lime and dolomite, and forms of farm waste, or stock outside of sheep, beef, dairy or deer, you can do this separately by using our Measuring emissions guide 2025.

This guide also allows you to calculate carbon sequestration from forests on your farm.

The data from this guide can be integrated with other emissions reporting software. Our Measuring emissions guide 2025 also explains its methodology for calculating emissions, which is different from the on-farm calculator.
