The Waitaki Catchment Water Allocation Regional Plan was approved by the Waitaki Catchment Water Allocation Board on 30 September 2005 and amended by the High Court in July 2006. The plan allocates the water of the Waitaki River and its tributaries, lakes, wetlands and aquifers as required under the Resource Management (Waitaki Catchment) Amendment Act 2004.
