This report documents an update of the national dataset for freshwater habitat condition, based on the results of standardised Rapid Habitat Assessment (RHA) monitoring undertaken by regional councils and unitary authorities between 2013 and 2024.
It presents calculations of RHA habitat scores for river sites across most regions, based on an index measuring 10 habitat parameters including flow diversity, fish and invertebrate habitat condition, deposited sediment, and bank erosion and vegetation.
The report includes a preliminary analysis of river habitat state across the RHA network for the 2020 to 2024 period, and compares this with the 2015 to 2019 period to describe change over time. The analyses, summary statistics and background detail contained in the report support the use and interpretation of the supplied dataset for national environmental reporting.
