Between 10 August and 14 September 2018, the Government consulted on the proposed mandatory phase out of single-use plastic shopping bags in New Zealand.
As well as asking the public and organisations whether they agreed with the proposed mandatory phase out, we sought views on which type of bags should be included in the mandatory phase out (based on thickness), timeframes for implementing a mandatory phase out, and whether any retailers should be exempted from the mandatory phase out. We also asked for feedback on any measures that would help New Zealanders adjust to life without single-use plastic shopping bags.

Correction to document (December 2018)
We made changes to the total number of submissions received (from 9,349 to 9,354) and the attribution of some submissions as either individual (from 1,809 to 1,798) or Greenpeace form submissions (from 4,159 to 4,173).
These changes are due to inconsistencies in how submissions had been classified that were identified during redaction of submissions for publication on our website.
Associated numbers and figures in the text have been updated (where views were summarised by submitter type). One additional local government submission was also identified (bringing the total number of local government submissions from 15 to 16).
All submissions were considered and the changes referenced here do not affect the overall support for the proposals that were consulted on.
