This report presents revised reference ranges for soil quality indicators for environmental reporting. The revised reference ranges are based on extensive new data and international advances in describing soil health. The reference ranges replace the 'provisional target ranges' originally published in 2008 and revised in 2013.
The report found that not enough data and evidence is available to link soil quality reference ranges to environmental outcomes. It is recommended that this should be a focus of further research.
The report was co-authored by Manaaki Whenua Landcare research, AgResearch, Plant & Food and Scion, now combined in the Bioeconomy Science Institute. The work was supported and informed by councils, MPI and rural industry groups who participated in workshops.
