Biennial reports are released by New Zealand every two years as per our obligation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

This submission is New Zealand’s Fifth Biennial Report and presents New Zealand’s progress towards our international climate commitments and in particular shows:

  • our historical and projected greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and trends
  • up-to-date emissions reduction targets and progress towards those targets
  • policies and measures in place to support New Zealand’s transition and climate change efforts, and support for developing countries in their efforts of adapting and mitigating against the rising threats of climate change.

Date of next submission

This report will be the final submitted in this format under the UNFCCC. The biennial report will be superseded by the biennial transparency report (BTR) under the Paris Agreement.

New Zealand will submit its first BTR under the Paris Agreement no later than 31 December 2024 in line with decision 1/CP.24.
