This technical report assesses different methods to assess streambank erosion and riparian condition: a field-based method and aerial imagery analyses. The assessments were done by the Bioeconomy Science Institute Maiangi Taiao, assisted by Waikato and Hawke’s Bay regional councils. The report concludes that each monitoring approach has distinct strengths and limitations, and that the appropriate method depends on the monitoring objectives. The report also recommends that future monitoring should integrate complementary spatial datasets and emerging technologies to support more efficient and semi-automated monitoring.
