Updated Measuring Emissions Guide released
The Ministry for the Environment has released an updated guide to help organisations measure and report on their emissions.
The Measuring Emissions Guide is a tool that helps calculate the emissions produced across an organisation in a standardised way. This can support organisations to better understand, manage and reduce their emissions.
The guide is regularly updated to ensure emissions factors are in line with the best available data, science, and evidence for reporting emissions.
The Ministry has recently released a new digital version of the guide. This digital guide centralises current and historic versions of the:
Measuring and reporting emissions can help organisations to:
- increase awareness and encourage reduction of energy and resource use
- identify greater efficiencies and cost savings
- manage risks more effectively
- demonstrate social responsibility
- identify business opportunities
- develop a competitive edge
- inspire peers and motivate others
- prepare for any disclosure requirements
- be transparent and communicate impacts to customers
- contribute to New Zealand’s transition to a low-emissions and climate resilient future.
The Ministry for the Environment measures its own emissions. You can find out more about the Ministry's sustainability strategy, emissions reduction targets and climate disclosures here. The Ministry's emissions for 2025 will be published soon.
The guide can be used by a range of organisations including:
- Government agencies that are part of the Carbon Neutral Government Programme.
- Climate Reporting Entities under the Climate Related Disclosures reporting regime.
- Any other organisation, business or group that wants to voluntarily measure and/or report its emissions.
