Consulting on New Zealand's emissions reduction plan

The Climate Change Response Act 2002 requires the Government to prepare emissions reduction plans setting out how we will meet emissions budgets, which will act as stepping stones (or interim targets) towards our 2050 emissions reduction targets. We are currently working on New Zealand's first emissions reduction plan (ERP), which is due by the end of May 2022

On 13 October the Government invited New Zealanders to inform the country’s first Emissions Reduction Plan with the release of a consultation document Te hau mārohi ki anamata Transitioning to a low-emissions and climate-resilient future. The document contains a range of policy ideas to decrease the country’s emissions,

We are now halfway through the consultation, and have had over 29,000 social media impressions, and over 11,000 visits to the ERP part of the MfE website. This is the only opportunity to comment on the first Emissions Reduction Plan, with no further consultation planned prior to the launch of the final plan, by 31 May 2022.

Consultation on the emissions reduction plan closes at 11.59pm on Wednesday 24 November.
