How do we ensure the future wellbeing of land and people?

We are carrying out public consultation on our draft long-term insights briefing. It aims to enhance public discussion on long-term issues and contribute to future decision-making.

We’d like your views on how to protect and improve the future wellbeing of both land and people.

Your input and feedback will help inform the final version of the briefing, which will be submitted to Parliament.

Submissions are due by 18 October.

Why we are consulting

Land is a taonga. It is intrinsically linked to the wider environment, and to people’s lives and livelihoods.

For many years Aotearoa New Zealand’s land has been under pressure. If current trends continue, pressures on our land could increase – affecting both its health and the wellbeing of future generations

So what can we do to secure a bright future for both the land and the generations that follow us?

Our draft long-term insights briefing outlines a possible vision for the land and people’s relationship with it, and ways Aotearoa New Zealand could achieve that vision.

About long-term insights briefings

All government agencies are required to produce long-term insights briefings every three years. This is our first one.

The briefings identify and explore long-term issues that matter for the future wellbeing of people in New Zealand. They present medium and long-term trends, risks and opportunities that may affect Aotearoa, as well as analysis and options for addressing these.

The briefings aim to be thought provoking. They are not government policy.

The Ministry’s draft briefing was developed based on input from subject matter experts, targeted engagement and public consultation on the proposed topic earlier this year: People and place: ensuring the wellbeing of every generation.
