Government and industry committed to a workable pricing system for agricultural emissions

The Government received nearly 23,000 submissions during its consultation on proposals to price agriculture emissions. The Climate Change and Agriculture Ministers today published a report on the Government’s proposed system, a legislated requirement of the Climate Change Response Act (CCRA).

This report does not represent final decisions which will be made by Cabinet in early 2023, however emerging themes from the consultation are summarised in the relevant sections of this report.

For example, the Government recently announced we will work with He Waka Eke Noa’s partners to develop a strategy to recognise on-farm carbon sequestration.

The Government will continue working with the sector to develop a pricing system that is fit for purpose, gives certainty, considers transitional support for the most affected farmers and achieves reductions in agricultural emissions.
