Emissions Trading Scheme settings and regulations updated

The Government has announced how many New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) units will be available for auction and price controls for the next five years.

The ETS is the Government’s main tool to reduce net emissions and puts a price on greenhouse gas emissions.

Key decisions include:

  • reduced number of units (NZUs) available for auction
  • auction floor price, cost containment reserve price and volume to stay substantially the same (only adjusted for inflation and extended to 2029)
  • changes to units available for auction to take effect in 2025.

See about the annual updates to emission units and price control settings.

Decisions on ETS regulations technical updates have also been made.
